Tahri sets European record in 3000m steeple
French Boubdallah Tahri set a new European steeple record clocking 8:02.19 at the Alma Athle Tour French series meet in Metz on Saturday.
The 30-year-old knocked off a full two seconds from the previous European record set by Simon Vroemen of Netherlands that stood at 8:04.95, set at the Van Damme Memorial in 2005.
Kenyan Patrick Terer, who was third at the World Junior Championships in 2008, finished second with a personal best 8:13.96 ahead of another Kenyan Bernard Mbugua, who with 8:17.94 had a personal best.
“I’m really pleased, it’s like a dream. I always said I want to beat the French record in my city Metz, but a European record is unbelievable,” Tahri was quoted by French media as saying.
